SEATOM Invited to IAEA Ministerial Launch of the ATLAS Initiative in Washington, D.C.
Porvoo, Finland – September, 26, 2026 – SEATOM (seatomtech.com) was invited by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi to the high-level Ministerial Event launching the Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) initiative. The event, which can be described as a historic step in the commercial nuclear maritime sector, took place in Washington, D.C. on 26–27 August 2026.

ATLAS is a new initiative of the International Atomic Energy Agency that supports the development and deployment of civil nuclear-powered ships and floating nuclear power plants. Its core is an integrated framework for nuclear safety, security and safeguards in the maritime environment. The IAEA is carrying out this work now together with the International Maritime Organization, governments, regulators, shipping companies, classification societies and the nuclear industry.
The invitation to Executive Chair Reko-Antti Suojanen and the SEATOM delegation – joined by Chief Nuclear Officer, Prof. Juhani Hyvärinen and CEO Roope Marttila – places SEATOM among the stakeholders shaping how maritime nuclear moves from concept to reality. The Ministerial Event formally inaugurated ATLAS. It also opened strategic and technical dialogue aimed at a clear, actionable roadmap for the months ahead.
"A harmonised international framework is the missing piece for commercial nuclear shipping and this event in particular gives a strong signal of the government support that wasn’t explicitly there before. We're of course honoured to be part of the conversation from day one, and ATLAS confirms that maritime nuclear is moving mainstream" said Roope Marttila, CEO & Co-Founder of SEATOM Technologies.

SEATOM is developing an affordable modular small nuclear reactor system that incorporates many safety and security features tailor-made for marine and extreme environments. To that end, ATLAS is a key step for many of the most scalable vessel types – namely container ships but also cruise ships and bulkers – but also for nuclear power barges and offshore applications. A clear, internationally recognised licensing and safety pathway is what end users, insurers and regulators need before nuclear propulsion on these vessels can scale across the global fleet.

About SEATOM: SEATOM Technologies Oy is a Finland-headquartered startup building civilian / dual-use nuclear propulsion systems for the maritime industry.
